2009 "CHURCH OF THE YEAR"
A letter from Stuart,
There I was, flying through the air, or rather down through the air, towards the edge of the patio. Gill had said not to go and play footie in the garden or I would get messy before other folk arrived for the meal on the eve of the wedding. But this was Iran verses England, so there was much to play for. And we (England) won.
The wedding was my nephew’s, marrying another young doctor who happens to be Iranian, or Persian – and definitely not Arabic as they are quick to point out. So Ben married Merhnoosh (Mez) the next day, in Forest Row Church of England, with a Persian ceremony as part of the reception. The culture and music was a fascinating blend.
But back to the footie. As usual I exhibited more enthusiasm than skill and consequently lost my footing, crashing through the goal area. Although I scored in separate incidents, that particular one only resulted in pain and being trouble with Gill – no goal. But the split lip and grass stains on my shirt were worth it as we won.
Often young Christians have the enthusiasm without the sure footing which is needed. There can also be the problem when others are so concerned about their footing that they don’t have the enthusiasm to get stuck in at all.
I hope this autumn, as programme restart after the summer, we will rejoice in enthusiasm whilst also making sure we are solidly founded in the Person of Jesus. It’s not one or the other but both – which is why the church is a family of all ages and perspectives, learning from each other, working together, making our mistakes together. And I’ve read the Book and I know that in the end we win, big time! So it’s worth a few trips along the way, and let’s not lose our enthusiasm.
And by the way, Gill has forgiven me.
