Missions

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.” C H Spurgeon.

If we are Christians, we are witnesses to what Jesus has done in our lives. This doesn’t require a degree in theology. Secondly, we are adverts. Most of us know who Howard is and the Building Society he represents, with his bottle-lensed glasses. To see him on a billboard is to make the connections. We are those who will bring Jesus to mind for those we meet – for good or bad. The issue isn’t whether we are witnesses or adverts, the issue is whether we are being good or bad representatives of our Lord and Saviour.

We can improve our witness and we can be mobilised in our advertising; we can be nervous, even feel inadequate. But we are still what we are, with all our inadequacies.  And most of the people who need to see Jesus in us are themselves nervous, fearful and inadequate. Jesus entrusts his reputation to us, His Church. This isn’t a lonely thing – we show forth Jesus collectively as His Body, and filled with His Spirit, knowing that we will never be on our own for He has promised to be with us (and the context in which He made that promise is when we are going and making disciples!).

Let us make it a priority in our churches to get better at this mission stuff – by doing it, not just talking about it. We can support one another in this through our Networks and through Home Mission.
